About the food and clothing donations
About the food and clothing donations
The Food and Clothes Donations is run by a volunteer team, all of whom are bound by confidentiality. However, it is necessary for the Food and Clothing Donations to ask about practical details such as gender, age, where in the country, family size, clothing sizes, etc. This is done in order to provide the best possible service and to carry out needs assessments.
It is possible to request clothing approximately twice a year, and food approximately once a month.
The Food Donations mainly provides frozen and non-perishable food items. The contents may vary, but are mostly a combination of frozen meat, fish, and vegetables, as well as rice, pasta, and oatmeal. A food package contains food for several meals.
The Clothing Donations provides clothing, from innerwear to outerwear, for children and young people up to eighteen years of age.
The Food and Clothing Donations is closed during certain periods of the year (summer, autumn, Christmas, and Easter holidays, and other public holidays). Notices are always posted at the top of this page well in advance.
How does it work?

When can people receive help?
The purpose of the service is to help people who are financially vulnerable – for example if they are affected by illness, lose their job, or face a major unexpected expense that means they cannot afford to buy food or clothes for their children.
Although the Red Cross receives good support for the service, it involves significant costs, and volunteers spend a great deal of time. Therefore, it is very important that the purpose of the service is respected, and that people do not request food or clothing unless they actually need it.
Where does the help come from?
The clothing comes from Red Cross second-hand shops and is carefully selected.
Some of the food is donated by supporters, while the Red Cross purchases the rest (using funds collected through sales in the second-hand shops or other fundraising activities).
Who runs the service?
The Food and Clothing Donations is run by a team of around seven volunteers who work unpaid and voluntarily to help those in need in the Faroe Islands.
What if the clothes do not fit?
If the clothes or shoes do not fit the child, you are kindly asked to return them to the Red Cross. The clothes are carefully selected and can benefit another child if they do not fit yours. They can be returned by placing them in a clothing container marked “Clothing Donations” or by contacting us at klaednahjalpin@redcross.fo – we will find a solution.
